Rediscovering the Lyman M. Davis

by JaneFairburn on March 19, 2012

Here is a link to a video of a dive to the wreck of the Lyman M. Davis, which lies in Humber Bay, about 130 feet below the surface of Lake Ontario.

Blown up and burned as a spectacle off Sunnyside Beach in 1934, the Davis refused to completely die, and though now buried deep in frigid Lake waters just offshore, she remains a powerful metaphor for our forgotten waterfront and marine heritage. For more information on the ship, see my blog post of March 6, 2012.

Once you have the video up on your monitor, click on the bottom right hand corner of the image to see the dive in “large screen”. That way, you can get a better idea of the original size of the ship.

Many thanks to David Sheard, of Save Ontario Shipwrecks, who originally posted this beautiful video on You Tube, (November 8, 2006).

I remember the day Rick Jackson had invited me to search for the Lyman M Davis that summer day. I had sold my depth/fish finder. We found it within. a half hour. Rick put on his dive gear and soon came up from below. His years long search. was over. It was a wonderful bright summer day.
